Multi-Purpose Tokens 101

What MPTs (XLS-33) are, how they differ from IOUs and NFTs, and how to issue, hold, and account for them.

1. What Is an MPT? (vs. IOUs, vs. NFTs)

A Multi-Purpose Token (XLS-33) is a fungible, purpose-built token type with native compliance controls — unlike a trust-line-based IOU, it doesn't require every holder to establish a trust line with the issuer first, and unlike an NFT, it represents fungible (interchangeable) value, not a unique item.

2. Issuing an MPT

An issuer defines an MPT with a maximum supply, transfer rules, and optional compliance flags (like requiring authorization before holders can transact), then mints it to the ledger. From the MPT dashboard, issuance is a guided form — pick the parameters, submit, and sign.

3. Holding & Transferring MPTs

Holding an MPT doesn't require the trust-line setup step IOUs need, which lowers friction for recipients. Transfers between holders follow whatever rules the issuer set at creation — some MPTs are freely transferable, others require issuer authorization per transfer.

4. Compliance Controls on MPTs

Issuers can lock transfers, require per-transaction authorization, or freeze specific holders — controls built into the token type itself rather than bolted on afterward. This is what makes MPTs suited to regulated instruments like tokenized securities or restricted-distribution assets.

5. Tracking MPT Transaction History

XYZ Wallet tracks MPT issuance, transfers, and balance changes the same way it tracks XRP and IOU transactions — searchable, filterable, and included in auto-sync. Compliance flags apply to MPT movement just as they do to any other transaction type.

6. MPTs in Accounting (how they show up in reports)

MPT holdings and transfers appear in your reports and exports alongside other assets, valued at whatever pricing data is available for that token. Because MPTs can represent non-XRP-denominated value, cost-basis tracking treats each MPT type as its own asset class.

7. Common MPT Use Cases for Businesses

Typical business use cases include loyalty points, tokenized invoices or receivables, internal settlement tokens between subsidiaries, and compliance-gated securities. The common thread is fungible value that needs issuer-level control over who can hold or move it.

8. Troubleshooting MPT Issues

The most common MPT issue is a transfer failing because the recipient lacks required authorization — check the MPT's compliance flags before attempting a transfer. If a balance looks wrong, confirm the wallet has synced since the transaction settled; sync runs automatically but can lag by a few minutes.
